St. Mary's takes out Cascade Christian St. Mary's put the finishing touch on its run to the Class 2A boys basketball state tournament Saturday with a resounding victory over visiting Cascade Christian, 66-47. Seventh-ranked St. Mary's, 19-6 overall and the league champion with a 10-0 record, advances to state as the No. 1 seed from the Southern Cascade League. Cascade Christian, 16-9 overall, goes as the No. 2 seed. The tournament is Tuesday through Saturday at the Pendleton Convention Center and Pendleton High School. Cascade Christian opens at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday against Portland Adventist, the Northwest League's No. 1 seed. St. Mary's starts at 9 p.m. Tuesday against Crow, the No. 2 team from the Trico League. On Saturday, St. Mary's ran away from the Challengers as if they were standing still, bolting to a 24-7 lead after the first quarter. The Crusaders, making the state tournament for the third straight year, had taken it easy in practice the previous two years in advance of the tourney. This time, coach Tim Pflug had them going hard in workouts. "We came out just the way we practiced all week," he said, "and that was our goal. We want to do that in our first game at state." Michael Fiddler made 13 of 14 field goals for St. Mary's and scored 27 points. Meanwhile, Peter Staver made 4 of 5 3-pointers and scored 15 points. The two combined for 17 first-quarter points. SOC Boys GRANTS PASS 48, ROSEBURG 35 - At Grants Pass, the two teams came back Saturday afternoon for the final 6 minutes, 30 seconds of the Southern Oregon Conference playoff game following a fourth-quarter power outage Friday night. Roseburg scored the first five points when the game resumed, pulling within 41-33 and causing a stir in the home gym. But Tyler York made four straight free throws to quell the surge. Grants Pass (20-4) earned the No. 2 seed to the state subtournament and plays at home next Saturday against a to-be-determined opponent. Roseburg, the No. 3 seed, plays at Tualatin on Thursday. York had 16 points and five assists. Brant Minor scored 10, and Kory Mahr contributed seven rebounds and four assists. Joe Newton led Roseburg with 13 points. Skyline Boys NORTH VALLEY 57, PHOENIX 56 - At Merlin, North Valley wrapped up fourth place in the Skyline Conference with a victory Saturday in a game suspended Friday because of a power failure. The Knights will host Hidden Valley in a league playoff Tuesday. The game was stopped midway through the second quarter Friday with the score knotted 18-18, and it remained close when it resumed Saturday morning. The Knights' Sean Gronholm put back a missed shot in the late stages for a 57-53 lead, then Phoenix sophomore Jason Lockett made his third 3-pointer of the game with two seconds left to end the scoring. Brady Rhodes had 16 points, Mike Smith 15 and Brett Ellis 10 for the Pirates (7-17, 3-11 Skyline). Gronholm scored 26. SCL girls CASCADE CHRISTIAN 64, BONANZA 60 - Cascade Christian secured the Southern Cascade League's No. 1 seed to state by building a 15-point halftime lead, then staving off Bonanza's comeback Saturday at Superior Gym in the SCL playoffs finale. The Challengers (21-3 overall) begin play at the Class 2A girls state tournament in Pendleton with an 8 a.m. Tuesday matchup against the Tri-River League's No. 2 seed, the loser of Saturday's Regis-Santiam clash. The Challengers are making their fifth trip to state in six years under coach Loren King. Missing starting sophomore point guard Hannah Gettman, who is sidelined by an arm injury suffered in a car accident last week, Cascade Christian had four players score in double figures, led by senior post Amy Roseberg's game-high 18 points. Senior forward Whitney Brookins added 16, senior guard Laural Kelley had 15 and senior post Kristin Salamone tallied 12.
