Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend February 3, 2006 County attorney resigns Mike Jewett, Jackson County’s attorney since 1999, has resigned to return to private practice. The Ashland resident will stay on as county counsel until the Board of Commissioners finds a replacement. "Because of the day-to-day distractions of the job, it’s been hard to get at the litigation," said Jewett in an e-mail. "This change will allow me both to give the county’s litigation the time it deserves and to do what I really enjoy." Jewett said he will continue to defend the county in litigation when he goes into private practice. "He enjoys litigating and he wants to do that," said county Commissioner C.W. Smith. "I don’t think he enjoys the bureaucracy of government." Jewett is the second person to resign from the county counsel’s office recently. Steve Rinkle left last year to take a job with Pacific Retirement Services Inc. Advertisement Smith said that both men decided for professional reasons to leave the county. "It’s just a better fit for Mike," he said. Before he joined the county, Jewett was a trial lawyer at a private practice in Medford. He has practiced law since 1978. Jewett is a former president of the Jackson County Bar Association and is past president of the Oregon County Counsel Association.
