New name for junction adds trouble "Big X"??? It was always called the Big Y intersection. Maybe it’s big X now, but when referring to the way it was or where it is located, Big Y makes more sense to people. When I first saw "Big X" in an article a few months ago, I thought surely it was a typo or written by a newcomer to the area. Everyone knows Big Y — hardly anyone has heard of Big X. — Tom K., Medford Well Tom, Big Y got run outta town when Big X hit the streets. We know this is a big deal for many folks in the Rogue Valley, but transportation officials long ago decided the designation of "Big Y" didn’t apply to an intersection that now looks more like a "Big X." Advertisement In fact, the name change cost $16 million when you figure how much ODOT spent to reconfigure the intersection near the Rogue Valley Mall, adding a leg to the "Y." Since "Big Y" referred more to the shape of the intersection as it used to be, it didn’t make sense to keep that name forever. Transportation officials stopped calling it the Big Y in 2002 after all the road work was completed. By the way, ODOT has recently been planting shrubbery to grace the intersection.
