Ashland goes cold in loss to Redmond at 5A tourney By Danny Penza Updated: Mar 09, 2022 10:18 PM A A As the Redmond offense started to get shots to fall Wednesday afternoon, the same couldn’t be said for the Ashland boys basketball team. Behind the hot shooting of Oregon Tech commit Garrett Osborne, No. 8 seed Ashland saw its early lead evaporate and top-seeded Redmond raced past the Grizzlies to claim a 51-37 win in the quarterfinal round of the Class 5A boys basketball tournament at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis. “We did everything right, but 16-for-46 is not going to get you a win in the quarterfinals,” said Ashland head coach Sam Osofsky. “We were right there defensively, we wanted to keep the game in the low 50s — that was our magic number and we did that. But, for all of the basketball scouting and all the things you go through and work on, it’s a make-miss game and our shots did not fall today.” Ashland (15-10), making its first state tournament appearance since 2007, will face No. 5 seed Crescent Valley (20-6) — which lost 49-47 to Silverton (21-5) — at 9 a.m. this morning in a consolation bracket game. Redmond (21-5) will face fourth-seeded Silverton for the right to play in Saturday’s 5A title game. Osborne, a 6-foot-3 wing, scored 16 of his game-high 28 points in the first half, helping the Panthers recover from a tough start offensively to pull in front of the Grizzlies and take a 30-18 lead into the half. Osborne also pulled down eight rebounds and was nearly perfect from the free throw line, missing just one of his 10 attempts. Ashland held a 7-2 lead after 6-foot-10 forward Egan Shields knocked down the first of his two first-half 3-pointers. Redmond, however, responded with a 14-0 run to take a 16-7 lead midway through the second quarter. In total, after Ashland held its 7-2 lead, Redmond outscored the Grizzlies 28-11 the rest of the first half. “(Osborne) ended up getting 28, but we thought we made it tough on him,” said Osofsky. “He ended up being 9-of-19 from the field, and our goal was if we could get him to 6- or 7-of-20 then we’d be in a good place.” Ashland only got the Redmond lead down into single digits twice in the third quarter, with the Grizzlies’ shooting woes — they only shot 34.8% (16-for-46) from the field and 21.4% (3-for14) on 3-pointers for the game — preventing them from going on any extended runs despite limiting the Panthers to just six points in the period. Redmond, which shot 41.5%, led by double digits the entire fourth quarter. Shields, a junior, scored 16 points and had five rebounds to pace the Ashland offense and was the lone Grizzly to score in double figures. Senior forward Hawthorn Lapierre added eight points and had a team-high seven rebounds. Redmond’s Evan Otten, a 6-foot-8 junior center, nearly had a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds. “I thought (Redmond) did a good job defensively and they were disciplined,” said Osofsky. “They put their best defender on Izzy Golden — which I thought was an interesting play — and held him to 0-of-5 from 3, so that really hurt us to have our second-leading scorer have only four points. We got our looks, but maybe we were a little tight or just one of those nights. The guys felt loose before the game, it just didn’t go.” ASHLAND (15-10) Egan Shields 7-15 0-0 16; Hawthorn Lapierre 3-9 2-3 8; Toby Barnes 2-7 0-0 5; Izzy Golden 2-9 0-0 4; Silas Wright 1-1 0-0 2; Sean Thompson 1-3 0-0 2; Crosby Lehnerz 0-0 0-0 0; Sebastian Stowasser 0-2 0-0 0.
