South finishes 13th at tourney SAN DIEGO The South Medford High volleyball team found itself up against some of the best volleyball teams in the nation at the California Challenge Tournament this weekend. But in the end, South Medford coach Jerry Hagstrom was excited with the way his team performed. The Panthers lost both of their matches on the final day of the tournament, but still finished a respectable 13th out of 24 teams. "I am pleased with the way we performed," Hagstrom said. "We played great against some outstanding schools. I felt we held our own against some of the best teams in the nation" The Panthers fell to Notre Dame Academy of Thousand Oaks, 15-8, 15-8, 18-16 in the first match in the Silver Bracket, and then lost to Santa Margarita of Orange County, 15-11, 15-11, 15-12. "Notre Dame is a state championship-caliber team," Hagstrom said. "And Santa Margarita is currently ranked 12th in the state." Kellie Thomas finished with a team-high 18 kills on the second day. Karla Zenz added 15 kills. Hagstrom was also pleased with the play of Amber Hunt and Megan Barry. Hunt was solid at the service line, dishing out four aces, while Barry led the team in assists with 51. "Amber had a great second day she served tough and was our best defensive player," Hagstrom said. "Megan set great against some really good opponents."
