Police Chief Mike Sweeny announced last May that he would retire in a year because of changes in the Public Employee Retirement System. He will step down May 31. The city expects to choose from among five finalists for the position by Friday, said City Administrator Phil Messina, and could announce the decision publicly at the April 8 City Council meeting. Thirty-five people applied for the job, Messina said, all of them residents of Oregon or California and with an average of 20-25 years’ law enforcement experience. No one already in the department applied. "We were impressed by the caliber of applicants we received for the position," said Messina. Sweeny, who led the department through the accreditation process in recent years, has four decades in law enforcement. His won’t be the only department retirement May 31. Lt. Tony McPherson also plans to step down then because of PERS changes. He began his career with the department in 1976 and climbed to his current rank in July 2001. Messina also announced that city finance director Bill Brugger plans to resign because of PERS but will stay to see the city through its annual budget process, which wraps up in June.
