Medford police say the dog attacked and bit a detective and then lunged at another officer who shot at the dog. Mail Tribune / Roy Musitelli Pit bull injures police detective By JACK MORAN Mail Tribune A Medford police detective was treated for bite wounds Friday after being attacked by a female pit bull during a search for stolen property on Haven Street. Detective Justin Ivens was released from Rogue Valley Medical Center a few hours after being bitten on the left forearm, Medford police Lt. Mike Moran said. After biting Ivens, the dog ran through the home, which was being searched in the 300 block of Haven Street, and charged toward another officer, who shot at the animal. Moran said the dog, a nursing mother, suffered only "a grazing wound to the hindquarter area" and was treated by a veterinarian before being taken to the Jackson County Animal Shelter where it will be quarantined for 10 days. The pit bull’s puppies and other dogs at the home also were taken to the shelter. Officers arrived at the home just after 10 a.m. to serve a search warrant. Moran said police had information that items stolen from a West Jackson Street home in an April 1 burglary could be found at the Haven Street residence. Several people inside the home saw the officers and ran out the back door, Moran said. Ivens was attacked by the pit bull after he and another detective detained one person in the backyard. Advertisement The dog then ran through the house and out the front door, where it ran toward a patrol officer. The officer fired one round at the dog before it turned and went back inside the home. Police established a perimeter around the house and were eventually able to call out its occupants. Nine people were detained during the search, Moran said. Officers recovered some of the items taken in the West Jackson Street burglary, but made no arrests in connection with the case until Friday evening. At about 8:25 p.m., a Medford police officer patrolling the downtown area tried to pull over a vehicle driven by Michael Thomas Gumaer, a resident of the Haven Street home. Instead of complying, Gumaer led officers on a chase that ended at the home, where he was arrested without incident, Sgt. Phil Eastman said. Gumaer was lodged in the Jackson County Jail on charges of first-degree burglary, first- degree theft, attempting to elude, reckless driving, reckless endangering and second-degree criminal mischief. He was being held Friday night on $41,000 bail, a jail spokeswoman said. Three people at the home when officers arrived Friday morning were arrested on charges unrelated to the burglary. Daniel Clyde Anderson Jr., 25, was lodged in the Jackson County Jail on a no-bail warrant charging him with a parole violation. Cerella Ann Powell, 46, was jailed on a warrant charging her with forgery and failure to appear in court. She was being held on $6,000 bail. A 16-year- old girl was referred to the Jackson County Juvenile Department on a charge of possession of methamphetamine.
