Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend August 23, 2005 Witness helps nab break-in suspect ASHLAND — A witness helped Ashland police officers and the Southern Oregon University security department catch a man who allegedly broke into a car Monday morning. Just before 6 a.m. a university employee saw the suspect pulling clothing and an electronic device that resembled a satellite receiver from a BMW parked on the 300 block of Wightman Street and alerted an SOU security officer. The officer located a man — Antone Aubrey, 18 — who matched the suspect’s description running down Wightman Street near Quincy Street, but the man refused to stop, according to APD Sgt. Malcus Williams. Ashland Police officer Theron Hull chased Aubrey on foot on Quincy Street and caught him, though Aubrey still resisted arrest. The SOU security officer drove the university employee who reported the attempted theft past the scene of the arrest and the university employee identified Aubrey as the car clouter. Aubrey was charged with unlawful entry into a motor vehicle, resisting arrest and harassment, and taken to Jackson County Jail. Advertisement Williams said nabbing a thief in the act is uncommon. Stolen property is more often located at a pawn shop or when it is sold to someone else. "We might find stolen property when we’re breaking up a party or responding to a noise complaint," Williams said. Williams suggested people investigate what’s happening outside when a dog barks and keep their eyes out for suspicious people in their neighborhood. Locking car doors also is important. "Many times we catch people because of active citizens, like in this case," Williams said, crediting the university employee who reported the crime.
