Evon "Bud" Pennington Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Feb. 24, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted Feb. 24, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News Evon "Bud" Pennington, 93, passed away at his home in Medford, Ore. Tuesday, February 17, 2015 surrounded by family. Born in Brooken, Okla. April 6, 1921, to William R. and Effie Pennington, Bud was the youngest of seven children, moving to Oregon when he was five. He was very close to his family, traveling around the state with his brothers in the 1930s looking for work, including a stint with the Civilian Conservation Corps. Answering the call to duty, Bud served as a U.S. Army infantryman in the Pacific campaign of World War II, helping to take the islands of Leyte and Okinawa from entrenched Japanese defenders. Recalling his experiences to a Mail Tribune reporter, Bud said, "I was in a Jeep on Okinawa when I saw a bright flash and then I woke up an hour later." His Jeep had been hit by a Japanese rocket, ripping the vehicle to pieces and piling wreckage around him. "I was in the bottom of that hole...you don't survive that, but I did." After spending three weeks recuperating from the attack, Bud returned to the line of duty. Following the end of the War, he met and married the love of his life, Alberta Richards. He then embarked upon what would become a long career in the lumber mill. When he finally retired, Bud was able to focus his attention on his favorite pursuits: hunting, fishing, gardening, and tinkering. Whether dealing with a backed up septic tank, scratching his head over suspect electrical work, or being chased by wasps around the roof of his home, Bud took it all in stride. Whatever the outcome, he would spin it into a tale worthy of Aesop as he sat in his favorite recliner, surrounded by wide-eyed grandchildren. A loving father, husband, grandfather, and greatgrandfather, Bud is survived by his wife of over 68 years; his children, Daniel (Leslie), Janice (Keith), and Carol (Victor); grandchildren, Erick (Jen), Chris (Kattie), Joe (Stacey), Kevin, Marc (Katie), and Katie Dawn; and seven greatgrandchildren. In addition to his large family, a number of others referred to Bud as "dad" or "grandpa," including Judy Jackson and Vicki Blandino. Although his loss saddens us all, we take solace in knowing that his loving spirit lives on. Whenever we show someone how to cast a line, bait a crab pot, bag an elk, or tell an even bigger fish story, Bud will be with us. There will be a graveside service with full military honors held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at the Eagle Point National Cemetery, followed by a celebration of his life with family and friends.
