Virginia was born October 1, 1917 to John Herman Hammitt and Anna Virginia Betting Hammitt in Donna, Ore. She attended grade school in Mohawk, Ore., and graduated from Eugene High School in June of 1935. She married Charles Allen Denison in 1937 in Eugene. Before she married, Virginia worked at the cannery in Eugene. In her young married life, she and Charles moved many times until finally settling in Oakridge in 1939. She also worked for Elmendorf Air Base in Anchorage, Alaska, and Pope & Talbot Lumber Company and Suburban Gas Company in Oakridge. Among Virginia’s interests were gardening, specializing in roses and flower arranging, golfing, traveling with Charles, and spending time with her family. She was a long-standing member of the Order of the Eastern Star and The Circle Bar Golf Course, where she was known as “1 Putt Ginny." She belonged to the Oakridge Garden Club, the Oakridge United Methodist Church, the Lady Lions, Rebecca’s, and the Lady Elks. Virginia moved to Medford in 2008 where she lived at Horton Plaza. At Horton, she loved to play bingo, poker, and pinochle with her many friends. She will be greatly missed by the residents there. The family wishes to thank Horton Plaza for all they do for their residents. Virginia is survived by her three daughters, Joanne Lee Nequist of Newark, Del., Carmen Judy Betts (William) of Medford, Ore., and Kathleen May Wood (Billy) of Newberg, Ore; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Hers is a happy family who loves their grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents, John H. Hammitt and Anna V. Betting; her husband, Charles; and her sister, Pauline Clausen. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 13, 2016 at the United Methodist Church, 48137 East 1st St., Oakridge, Ore. 97463. There will be a short graveside service for close family and friends, followed by a reception to be held at the church hall, for those who wish to visit with Virginia’s family and friends. Virginia’s family thanks the United Methodist Women for hosting this reception. Flowers and remembrance cards may be brought and sent to the church.
