Miscues doom SOU men in tourney finale WOU converts 22 Raider errors into 33 points during an 87-69 triumph ASHLAND — The Western Oregon University men’s basketball team parlayed an effective half-court trap to an 87-69 nonconference victory over Southern Oregon University in the Flagship Inn Classic finale at McNeal Pavilion Saturday night. The NCAA Div. II Wolves (3-1) converted 22 Raider miscues into 33 points, and senior all-star forwards Sean Kelly and Robert Day each posted 28-point efforts in the first meeting between the former league rivals since 1998. The Raiders (3-6) lost their fourth straight and fifth over the past six contests despite a 20-point, game-best 10-rebound performance by sophomore forward Shea Washington. SOU charged to a 13-7 edge in the first five-and-a-half minutes, but a 13-0 run capped by a Kelly 3-pointer with 9:49 left in the first half gave Western Oregon a lead it never relinquished. The Raiders were unable to make up a 38-32 halftime deficit and fell behind by as much as 20 as a result of an 18-for-27, 67-percent WOU second-half shooting clip. SOU, which received 17 points and nine rebounds from freshman post Jay Mayernik and 13 points and seven assists from sophomore guard Peter Nelson, won the rebounding battle 33-28. Advertisement Day and Kelly scored 33 of WOU’s 38 first-half points, but senior guard Chris Olson added eight in the second half to join the prolific duo in double figures for scoring with 13. Day finished the two-day tournament with 67 points, the highest output in consecutive games at McNeal Pavilion by any player since Brian Hills, the son of WOU head coach Tim Hills, poured in 46 and 24 against SOU in 1995 and ‘96. In Saturday’s other game, second-ranked Oregon Tech emerged as the lone undefeated team in the tournament by topping Willamette 84-60. The Owls (8-3) led 31-24 at the break and put the game away with a 15-5 run to start the second half. Owls senior forward Kevin Baker went 11-for-16 from the floor for a game-high 27 points. The Bearcats (3-1) were led by junior forward Harold Sublett’s 11 points.
