Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Aug. 3, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Aug. 3, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Aug. 3, 1915 DANGER LURKS IN DIRTY WATER "The city council and the health officers of Medford are derelict in their duty and criminally negligent for not filtering the city's water supply," states Dr. W.S. Goudy. "The water is full of dirt and sediment, and the proof of it is the drawing of a glass. A clot strainer over the faucet becomes foul in a little while, and first thing we know, there will be a serious epidemic. Everyone should filter or boil their water. "Whether the condition of the water is due to a foul reservoir, to lack of strainers at the city intake, to work being done in constructing the dam at Fish Lake, to the use of the watershed as horse and cattle pasture and camping ground, or to all these combined with low water, is for the city authorities to ascertain. I only know that the water as distributed is full of dirt and needs filtering." DRILLS DEEP WELLS FOR ARTESIAN WATER FOR IRRIGATION J. Stevens, who drilled on all the deep wells of the valley, has purchased the Star drilling outfit used on the Mundy oil well and is prepared to drill deep wells for irrigation purposes up to 1,500 feet depth. The Mundy oil well on Roguelands was put down 1,120 feet, but all flow of water was cased off, that its value for irrigation cannot be determined. Oil alone was sought. The deepest well in the valley is that at the Weinhard brewery plant, drilled 1,700 feet. A good flow of water was struck, but as it was tinged with sulfur, it was unfit for brewery uses, though it would have been good for irrigation purposes. The Vorheis well was drilled 900 feet. The only flowing well is that on the Talent Orchard company's property at Talent, the old Pellet place, where artesian water was struck. Mr. Stevens believes that artesian water can be struck in many parts of the valley, and where it is not, by drilling a 12- or 14-inch hole instead of an 8-inch hole, and using perforated casing, an adequate supply can be developed for pumping purposes.
