It's their first trophy since then as well. Trophies go to the top four teams. Vale, which captured the long relay in the final event of the meet, scored 84 points to St. Mary's 57. Third-place Scio scored 45, while Cascade Christian was seventh with 30 points. In the boys team race, St. Mary's was sixth with 34.5 points and Cascade Christian tied for seventh with 29. Winner Catlin Gabel scored 75. Crusaders coach Joe Volk doped out the girls meet and had Vale winning by only a point, even though he was conservative in factoring his team. “Our kids, they were like, hey, let's get after it,” he said. “We have a shot, let's go try and get it. But Vale did everything. They really are amazing.” Marissa Dobry had the highest individual finish for the Crusaders on the second and final day of the meet, placing second in 1,500. She also was second in the 3,000 on Thursday. Sophomore sprinter Aessa Catt contributed a fifth in the 100 and, like Meg Vasey and Emily Elmore, ran on the 4x100 relay that placed third, as well as on the long relay. “Our kids, to their credit, were a little down at the start of the day and battled and battled,” said Volk. “I told them they have to continue to fight to protect second place and get a board up on our gym wall.” The 4x400 relay time, which included a leg by Rachel Bennion, was 4:08.06 to Vale's 4:04.81. Other top individual showings by locals were seconds by St. Mary's Denten Edwards in the boys 300 hurdles and Cascade Christian's Tim McPherson in the 1,500. Dobry finished behind only Maya Rayle of Catlin Gabel for the second straight day. They also went 1-2 in the 3,000. Rayle's 1,500 time was 4:42.99, while Dobry clocked 4:48.93. “I was hoping to go out and run my own race, since I kind of learned from yesterday,” said the junior Dobry. “So, I'm happy with the effort but I'm definitely feeling a little flat today.” Dobry had the state's best time entering the meet, but admitted the 1,500 is not her forte. “The longer the better,” she said. Dobry was in front from the outset until Rayle caught her early in the third lap and pulled away. Edwards had a particularly peculiar trip in the long hurdles. A hamstring sleeve he wore came loose and worked its way down his leg around the third and fourth hurdles. “I was like, well, it's gonna fall off, so I might as well keep going,” he said. “I went over a hurdle and was looking up and it was all on my heel.” He worried about tripping on it but managed to kick it off. Even with that distraction, the senior ran the race of his life, notching a season best by more than 2 seconds and PR by more than a second. His time was 41.32 seconds. Creswell's Sean Kounovsky triumphed in 40.53. Edwards didn't think the sleeve affected the outcome. “That kid's fast,” he said. “I might have been able to give him a little bit of a run, but I don't think it impeded me that much.” For the senior McPherson, second was his best finish in six races at state, having had a third, fourth, two fifths and a sixth. He was forced to take the lead early because of a dawdling pace. “It was super slow,” said McPherson. “I wasn't planning on taking the lead at all until, hopefully, the end.” Eventually, he was overhauled by Fabian Cardenas of Umatilla, who on Thursday won his second straight 3,000 in meet-record time. Cardenas' 1,500 time was 4:07.85. McPherson came in in 4:13.47. “I was shooting for the win, to be honest,” said McPherson. “I figured I could hang back and sit with Fabian and probably go out and take the lead at some point and hope it worked out.” It worked out in one sense: He accomplished a personal record by a fraction of a second. Cardenas wasn't the only runner to pass McPherson after he gave up his lead, but the Challenger didn't give in, and instead showed off what has become a powerful kick to reclaim second down the stretch. “I've come to rely a little on the kick,” he said. “It normally comes to that point in the race where you have to give it everything, and that turns out to be a pretty good kick for me.” St. Mary's boys got a third from senior Scott Richter in the discus at 140-10, and a third from junior Bryce Parsons in the 800 in 2:01.71. The Crusaders' Hunter Rothfus tied for fourth in the high jump, clearing 6-0.
