Tree pickup aids charity Industrious boys and girls hoping to earn money for charity will pick up discarded Christmas trees this weekend and next. The Moose Lodge, with the help of Cub Scouts Pack 8 and other children, will pick up trees in Medford and Central Point today and Sunday for donations. It is the lodge's 46th annual fund-raiser, and the donations this year will be given to the Children's Advocacy Center and Dogs for the Deaf. Residents are asked to place their trees by the curb or in a conspicuous place; Moose Lodge volunteers will come to the door for donations. The trees will be chipped at the lodge and used as mulch around the grounds. For more information, phone the Moose Lodge at 776-0957. Talent Boy Scout Troop 535 and Ashland Boy Scout Troop 112 will pick up Christmas trees for recycling from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8. Trees should be placed by the curb Friday evening. Boy Scouts will accept donations from households offering a tree to be recycled. For those not at home, a pre-addressed envelope will be attached to the door for mail-in donations. The donations will be used to send boys to camp and fund troop activities. The mayors of Talent and Ashland have proclaimed Jan. 8 Christmas Tree Recycle Day. The trees will be chipped by the Parks Department and used for mulch and trail cover. Those living in an outlying area of Talent may call 535-2430; those in Ashland may call 482-0042. There is no citywide tree pickup scheduled in Phoenix, though Boy Scouts will be picking up trees in the Rogue Valley South mobile home park. Rogue Disposal and Recycling will accept discarded trees on regular pickup days for an extra $1.50 per three-foot section. The charges will be added to the following month's bill. The Medford/Alba Sister City Association, which did a tree pickup last year, will not have one this year, according to volunteer Jeanne Rasmussen.
