Photo by Nick Morgan When the air turns crisp, there are few better ways to spend a late Sunday morning than sharing a warm meal and a cup of coffee with a friend. Brunch has long been my favorite meal, and eggy breakfast dishes are a cuisine of their own for me. With that in mind, and considering that downtown Ashland tends to calm as the tourist season winds down, I decided to try an Ashland friend's favorite breakfast haunt, Brothers' Restaurant. The restaurant, located at 98 N. Main St., was bustling when we arrived, and we were initially told we'd have a wait of about 25 minutes for a table. Although I've experienced longer waits at some of Ashland's other choices for a gourmet breakfast — Morning Glory comes to mind — our wait at Brothers' ended up being closer to five minutes. That wouldn't be the first time they'd surpass my expectations that morning, but it was a good indicator of things to come. I went for one of their Saturday and Sunday specials, the Eggs Benedict Arnold ($13.95, plus tax), which took a split, house-made, cheese biscuit and topped it with sauteed spinach, sausage patties, poached eggs and a rich Hollandaise sauce, and served with a side of crispy hash browns. Everything about the dish was well prepared, from the pressed and grilled biscuit which gave the top layer a satisfying crisp, to the warm greens to round out the dish. My friend ordered his favorite at the restaurant, Huevos Rancheros ($12.50, plus tax). The dish includes two eggs, which my friend ordered over easy, on top of two crisp corn tortillas with sides of salsa, guacamole and pinto beans. The crisp tortillas seem to differentiate Brother's huevos rancheros from others' in the area, and the bite I had made me appreciate the way the flavors and textures worked together. Sides of tortillas were included, but the portion was generous enough that he didn't need them. I have to say, although they did well with my meal, that's the dish I'll be ordering next time. Our servers were friendly and quick. My friend's coffee got frequent warm-ups, and my soda didn't stay empty long. Overall, Brothers' Restaurant earned my full recommendation.
