White City lane changes Antelope Road will be widened to as many as six lanes By DAMIAN MANN Mail Tribune A three-mile stretch of Antelope Road in White City will undergo a $5.1 million transformation over the next year. The county will widen the roadway through an industrial area to as many as six lanes in some sections in the most expensive undertaking since the White City Urban Renewal District was created in 1991. "It’s a huge project," said Dave Abbott, project manager for the Jackson County Economic and Special Development Department. Construction on Antelope Road, which is mostly two lanes now, will be undertaken from approximately 700 feet west of Table Rock Road to approximately 800 feet east of Agate Road. Advertisement The street will be widened to six lanes between Table Rock and Pacific Avenue (including turn lanes) and five lanes between Pacific and Seventh Street. The roadway will have four lanes from Seventh to Agate, and narrow down to three lanes east of Agate. Two new traffic lights will be installed at Agate and Table Rock. Existing ditches on either side of the roadway will be filled in and a new storm drain system will be installed. Last year, urban renewal upgraded a portion of Antelope to the east of Highway 62 at a cost of $2.8 million to make the road feel more like a boulevard with meandering sidewalks. So far, the county has spent $46 million on improvements in White City since the urban renewal district was created. The money was collected from property taxes throughout the county. While the project is primarily designed to ease traffic flow through this industrial area, next year will bring delays and slower traffic speeds as the area is turned into a construction zone. Abbott said one lane will be open almost all of the time the project is under way. The contractor, LTM Inc., will be required to maintain two open lanes of traffic during rush hours of 7 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. The project, which began at the end of November, should be completed by Halloween 2006. Bob Smith, spokesperson for Boise Cascade, which owns a plant in White City, said he welcomes the improvements on a route that has seen more traffic because of residential development. "Any improvement to the roadway to ease congestion when hauling product will be beneficial for us," he said.
