Tax filing deadline is tonight By SHARI DOWNHILL The frenzy is almost over. With the tax deadline looming a mere few hours away, tax filers are heading to the Internal Revenue Services flashy website by the thousands to download forms and ask questions. The site has had an estimated 41 million visits since January, with 29,000 forms being downloaded each day. Even with the accessible high-tech help and an extra 24 hours to file this year, the IRS expects 37 million taxpayers to file returns in the last two weeks before tonights deadline and another 6.1 million to file for a four-month extension. Extensions can be obtained by calling the IRS at 888-796-1074 or with IRS Form 4868. Medfords post office at 333 W. Eighth St. will be open today from 8:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. Tax returns can be dropped off at that location until 11:59 p.m. for an April 16 postmark. For those wanting to work through last-minute difficulties before filing their tax returns today, IRS offices will provide forms and answers. Those who want to avoid the post office crowd can file and pay at an IRS office. Workers will date-stamp returns, checks and money orders. The offices will also accept and date-stamp completed extension forms. Medfords IRS office, located at 960 Ellendale Drive, Suite A (Ellendale Building), will be open today from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This evening, IRS employees will join Oregon Department of Revenue workers at Medfords West Eighth Street post office to answer questions and provide extension forms from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Another source of last-minute help is the IRS Internet web site, www.irs.gov. Those without computers can still pick up the telephone and call 800-829-1040 for assistance. Tax-Aide, the volunteer organization sponsored by the IRS, AARP and Oregon Department of Revenue, will be available in both Jackson and Josephine counties today in the following locations: Medford Medford Senior Center, 510 E. Main, 541-772-2273. Grants Pass River Valley Community Church, 405 N.E. Sixth St., 541-955-5047. Tax-Aide volunteers will prepare basic tax returns. They do not prepare business or complex returns.   Mail Tribune Home | Ottaway Newspapers, Inc. | Dow Jones & Co., Inc. | Privacy | Contact Us Copyright 2001 Mail Tribune, Inc.
