Annabelle Sears Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jul. 15, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted Jul. 15, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News Annabelle Sears Annabelle Sears of Medford, Ore. passed away in the presence of her family in Corvallis, Ore. July 3, 2015. She was 96 years old. Annabelle is survived by her sons, Richard Sears of Beijing, China and Jon Sears of Corvallis, Ore. She was preceded in death by her parents, Horace and Edna Berg of Roseburg; her husband, Fred Sears of Medford; and her sister, Clarabelle Briggs of Albany, Ore. Annabelle was born to Horace and Edna Berg in 1919, followed two years later by her sister, Clarabelle. She attended Roseburg High School and played in the school’s first band. She graduated in 1937 and then attended Oregon State College, achieving a degree in Science and Mathematics as well as her teaching certification in 1941. During World War II she taught advanced mathematics to elite military students, assisted in publication of a text book “Essential Mathematics," and taught at various high schools. Following the war she returned to Roseburg where, as a volunteer at the Veteran’s Hospital, she met her husband, Fred Sears. In 1949 Annabelle and Fred moved to Medford and started their family. Annabelle was always active as a volunteer whether it be the March of Dimes, the PTA, the costume-maker for the school play, or helping at the Eastwood Baptist Church where she sang in the choir since 1971. Annabelle was an instructional assistant and later a substitute teacher in Medford Schools where she worked to the age of 87. Mathematics and music remained a life-long interest to Annabelle. Often she broke into song or stopped to count the petals of a flower, checking to see if the number matched the Fibonacci sequence. She always valued and held dear her family and her many friends and always she sought to be of service to others. This value of service was depicted in a song passed to her by her parents “Brighten the Corner Where You Are.” An informal gathering to celebrate Annabelle’s life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, July 19, 2015 at the Fellowship Hall of Eastwood Baptist Church in Medford. Instead of flowers or donations, Annabelle would be honored by a moment of reflection on the blessings others have been in our lives and a single act of kindness one could do to pass this blessing to others.
