RAIDER ROUNDUP: SOU extends record streak By SOU Sports Information Oct 21, 2022 11:22 PM A A SPRINGFIELD — For the first time in team history, Southern Oregon owns an eight-match unbeaten streak after coasting to a 3-0 win against Bushnell in a Cascade Conference women’s soccer clash Friday afternoon at Les Schwab Sports Park. Two teams headed in opposite directions remained on their respective trajectories as Malaika Quigley went for a goal and an assist and Sophia Connell supplied two second-half assists. The Raiders, who this week received votes in the NAIA Top 25 coaches’ poll for the first time in 2022, improved to 7-4-3 overall and 6-1-2 in the CCC, winning for the sixth time during their streak and staying in third place with three regular-season contests to go. The Beacons (0-15, 0-10) stayed winless. Phoebe Bunn scored her second goal of the season in the eighth minute, taking an assist from Quigley following a corner-kick-induced scramble. Quigley tallied her second goal in the 63rd, heading home Connell’s free kick, and Bell recorded her first seven minutes later via another Connell setup. Connell, a junior defender, has tallied all four of her assists over SOU’s last four games. The Beacons managed just one shot, which was saved by Ashlynn Hernandez. The Raiders had 24 and put nine on goal. Men’s Soccer SOU 3, BUSHNELL 1: At Springfield, Southern Oregon’s top goal-scorers all got involved in the Raiders’ seventh win in their last eight Cascade Conference games. Alan Gaytan and Sam Walker banked a goal and an assist apiece, and Adrian Villegas accounted for the other score as SOU improved to 10-5 overall and 7-3 in the CCC. The Beacons (4-11-1, 2-9) got their only goal on Alejandro Munoz’s penalty kick in the 36th minute. They only produced one other shot on target. By then, the Raiders already had a two-goal cushion. Villegas tallied for the fourth time in five games and the sixth time this season in the 11th minute, assisted by Walker. Walker deposited his team-leading ninth goal four minutes later, set up by Gaytan. In the 73rd, Gaytan got in on the act with his fifth goal over SOU’s last four contests, taking advantage of an open net. With his goal, Villegas became the third Raider to total 20 in his career. Walker is two away from joining the club, and Gaytan is its leader with 26. The Raiders have scored three or more goals five times in their last eight games. They racked up 26 shots and 11 on goal in this one. Volleyball CORBAN 3, SOU 0: At Salem, No. 3-ranked Corban overpowered Southern Oregon in a 25-20, 25-21, 25-18 Cascade Conference sweep at the C.E. Jeffers Center. Winners of 15 straight, the Warriors (22-2 overall, 16-1 CCC) got 14 kills from Rylee Troutman and 11 from Makayla Roginski. Ally Schmidt had eight kills on 14 swings and three blocks. Their collective attacking average was .325, the highest for a Raider opponent this season. Hailey Van Well’s 10 kills led the Raiders (16-8, 10-7). Hannah Randall amassed 24 assists, six digs and three service aces. They turned just 30 of their 114 attacks into kills, hitting .096.
