Last year alone, the number of people in the county increased by 3,427, or 1.9 percent, U.S. Census figures released Thursday showed. That figure included 2,061 births and 1,997 deaths between July 1, 2002, and July 1, 2003, with the remaining increase coming from folks who moved into the area. Cumulative figures are based on tallies using a base population figure of 181,269 on April 1, 2000. By July 1, 2003, the county’s population had topped 190,000 for the first time. Overall, Oregon’s population grew by 4 percent from 2000 to 2003, to 3,559,596. Deschutes County was the fastest-growing during the time span, rising 12 percent from 2000 to 2003. Sherman County lost the most residents between 2000 and 2003, declining by 9.3 percent.
