Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 1, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted May. 1, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News May 1, 1915 GO TO SCHOOL DAY DISTRICT 90 Roosevelt school, district 90, held their "Go to School Day," which was appointed by the county superintendent and supervisor, April 29. The forenoon was devoted to regular school work, the afternoon to a short program by the pupils, followed by an open meeting of the parents, officers and patrons of the district, opened and led by Mr. Wells and Mr. Chase. The standardization of the schools and the project work were topics discussed. Liberty school, district 51, joined at noon in an elaborate dinner and remained to participate in the program of the afternoon. The sudden change in the weather and sickness prevented some from attending who had planned to do so. Everyone expressed themselves as having had an enjoyable time. McKEE IN TROUBLE OVER POST OFFICE ASHLAND, May 1 — Complications in the case of L.D. McKee, formerly deputy here under Postmaster J.R. Casey, continue to increase instead of lessening. Reports are to the effect that McKee, who went to Indiana some time ago, has been summoned to appear at Portland to explain, presumably before federal officials, numerous discrepancies in his accounts. As deputy, he did the banking for the local postoffice, and it is in this connection that the discrepancies are alleged to have occurred. He sought to resign at the time postal inspectors discovered certain irregularities in his department, but instead of accepting his resignation, the government ordered him suspended forthwith, and later, made the suspension a peremptory discharge. He was bonded in one of the standard companies. CANNERY TO OPEN IN MIDDLE OF JUNE Manager R.D. Hoke of the Co-operative cannery announces that the operations will begin this year about the middle of June, and the first canning will be of loganberries. The acreage in this fruit is the largest in the history of the valley, and the cannery is prepared to handle the crop. After the loganberries will come the tomatoes and the corn. The additional machinery ordered for the cannery is on the way from the east, and as soon as it arrives it will be installed. A force of men have been at work the last 10 days making improvements getting ready for this work. The outlook at present is that the second year of operation of the cannery will be more than last year, when a 6 percent dividend was paid to stockholders.
