Science Lecture: Gigliola Staffilani, MIT Abby Rockefeller Mauze professor of mathematics, will give a presentation “How the Complex Wave Phenomena Inspires Beautiful Mathematics,” from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Friday, May 4, in Room 151 of the Science Building on the Southern Oregon University Campus, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland. In this talk, Staffilani will try to convey how the mathematical study of wave phenomena has also created and inspired a whole set of new mathematical tools. These tools are now used to answer open problems in completely different settings, from number theory to probability to symplectic geometry and more. Silent Disco: Silent Movement will host its third annual Silent Disco in the Park from 5 to 11 p.m. Friday, May 4, at the Butler Bandshell in Lithia Park in Ashland. Rent a pair of wireless headphones for a $5 donation then roam freely from the Butler Bandshell to the playground and even the Plaza and beyond.
