Curtis was dominant at the net, pounding 20 kills, and Grieve used her "wicked floater," said Eagles coach Brianna Groves, to spark the 26-24, 26-24, 25-22 victory. "It was close," said Groves. "It was just a strong serving game and a battle of serve-receive. But if we could get the pass up and get it to Ashley, it was all done because they had no block. ... She was definitely on fire." Eagle Point (6-3, 3-2 SOC) trailed in game. Advertisement In the first game, Grieve helped the cause serving points 7 to 10 — three of which were aces — then came back to finish off the game, serving the final three points, including two aces. Kelsey Heider then put together a couple of serving streaks in Game 2 for the Eagles. Shannon Richardson added 10 kills in the win, while Annie Mannenbach notched 21 assists and Grieve 14 assists. ASHLAND 25-25-21-25, GRANTS PASS 18-21-25-23 — At Ashland, Ashland played two of its finest games of the season to start the match, then held on for the SOC triumph. Chelsea Van Lehn had 17 kills for the Grizzlies (4-1 league and overall). Chey Hale added 12 kills and 19 digs, Erika Boehnke tallied seven kills and three solo blocks and setter Kate Morris amassed 43 assists. KLAMATH UNION 17-25-25-25, CRATER 25-11-22-20 — At Central Point, Crater broke through in the first game but couldn’t sustain the momentum in the SOC loss. The Comets (1-7, 0-5 SOC), who at one time had three freshmen playing at the same time, got 13 kills and 18 digs from junior outside Justine Bettencourt. Freshman setter Randi Salyer had 35 assists, two aces and served 12 points. Freshman outside Haley Hevern produced nine digs. Skyline Conference PHOENIX 25-25-20-24-15, NORTH VALLEY 23-10-25-26-12 — At Phoenix, Brittany Mayhew’s tip kill ended a five-game battle between Skyline powers. The Pirates (7-2, 3-1 Skyline) rode dominant serving to win the first two games before North Valley’s big front line and a fine defensive effort rallied the Knights (4-1, 3-1). In Game 5, Phoenix, fueled by the leadership of Ashley McCarty and Mayhew, built a four-point cushion midway through and refused to let North Valley come back. Mayhew accumulated 27 assists, while Jessica Howard and Lisa Meredith slammed 10 kills apiece. Nicole Engle was 22 of 23 from the service line, and Shonda George was perfect on 21 attempts. The Pirates scored 15 and 11 points, respectively, off their serving. ILLINOIS VALLEY 25-18-18-25-15, HIDDEN VALLEY 18-25-25-19-12 — At Murphy, Illinois Valley earned its first Skyline victory by coming from behind. Kim Hamilton was an all-around stalwart for the Cougars (1-3 Skyline), posting 15 digs, 14 kills, seven blocks, five aces and three assists. Serena Barry added 15 assists and seven kills. Sam Masiak led Hidden Valley (0-4) with 10 kills. HENLEY 25-25-25, ROGUE RIVER 8-9-11 — At Rogue River, Henley recovered from a rare league loss Tuesday to Phoenix with a sweep of Rogue River. The Hornets are 5-3 overall, 3-1 in the Skyline, while the Chieftains are 1-3 in conference action. Southern Cascade League CASCADE CHRISTIAN SWEEPS — At Bonanza, Cascade Christian beat Lost River, 25-14, 25-15, 25-14, and Bonanza 25-17, 25-16, 23-25, 17-25, 16-14, in SCL matches. Against Lost River, the Challengers’ Emily Overstreet had four blocks and Nicole Plummer had six kills. The team served at 92 percent. Against Bonanza, freshman Melissa Gmur was 25-for-27 serving, with eight aces, including one on the last point of the match. She also had 17 assists. Natalie Dicus chipped in 18 kills, Lindsay Johnson had 12 digs and Cascade served at 90 percent. Danae McGrath provided important sub minutes in each match for the Challengers (3-2, 2-1 SCL). ST. MARY’S SWEEPS — At Chiloquin, St. Mary’s won a pair of Southern Cascade League matches, downing Gilchrist, 25-17, 25-9, 25-17, then Chiloquin, 25-10, 25-20, 22-25, 25-22. Against Gilchrist, the Crusaders’ Chrissy Seus had 10 kills and five blocks, Kathryn Zielony had 10 kills and 17 digs and Amanda Hall led in serving (18-for-18 with nine aces) and assists (12). Her ace total was two shy of the match school record. Against Chiloquin, Seus mimicked Hall, only in kills. Seus’ 24 kills were two short of the St. Mary’s record, and she didn’t commit a hitting error in either match Thursday. She added 23 digs against the Queens. Hall provided 26 assists and six aces, while Zielony produced 12 kills and 35 digs for the Crusaders (5-4, 3-0 SCL).
