http://www.omniture.com --> Email Story to a Friend June 8, 2006 Suspect injured as he flees police By ANITA bURKE Mail Tribune A Medford man police linked to two burglaries in May is in the hospital after he led officers on a chase through west Medford Tuesday. Victor Benjamin Villalobos, 29, of the 400 block of South Columbus Avenue, will be lodged in the Jackson County Jail on theft and burglary charges after he is released from Rogue Valley Medical Center, Medford police Lt. Tim George said. Villalobos is being treated at the hospital for pelvic injuries suffered when he jumped over a fence and landed in a pile of rocks or bricks, George said. Detectives suspect Villalobos in two burglaries reported in May. "We believe he is a burglar and a thief who is a threat to the community," George said. On May 25 a woman reported a break-in at a home in the 600 block of Hedy Jane and the theft of a computer. On May 29 police got a report of a break-in at a house in the 400 block of North Grape Street while a 90-year-old woman was home. Although she wasn't aware of the intruder at the time, she discovered missing items the next day, police said. Investigators recovered the stolen computer and identified Villalobos as a suspect, police said. At about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, police were called in response to a disturbance involving Villalobos and a woman in the 400 block of South Columbus Avenue. When officers arrived, he fled. Police determined that he had been at a duplex there and they got a search warrant for the location, according to a news release prepared by Sgt. Tim Doney. They found items reported stolen in the Grape Street burglary. At about 5:10 p.m. an anonymous caller tipped police that Villalobos was at the Woodland Heights Market at the corner of South Columbus Avenue and Prune Street, the release said. When an officer arrived, he dashed out the back door Officers surrounded a four-block area and called for a police dog to help search. Before the dog arrived, officers on foot caught up with Villalobos in the 1700 block of Farr Street as he leaped over a fence, George said. He was arrested on charges of first-degree theft, first-degree aggravated theft and two counts of first-degree burglary. He was taken to Rogue Valley Medical Center, where hospital officials said he was in good condition Wednesday. When he is released from the hospital, he will be lodged in jail, George said. Detectives are still investigating the possibility Villalobos was involved in other crimes. Investigators ask anyone with information about him to call 774-2230.
