The beloved Southern Oregon native, who died after a crash during time trials at the Indianapolis 500 on May 12, 1973, is being recognized at the World of Speed Museum in Wilsonville and in a new book. Pollard lived in Medford in the 1960s and early '70s. He was born in Dragon, Utah, and grew up in Los Angeles and Roseburg. The Roseburg High graduate competed in five Indy 500 races, with his best finish being eighth in 1967. A 33-car exhibit, which celebrates the 100th running of the Indy 500, opened in June and will remain until April at the museum in Wilsonville. It features Indy cars from seven decades, spanning the race's early era to modern cars. Admission is $10 for adults, $8.50 for seniors, students and active military members and $5 for children ages 6-12. "It's an amazing thing," says Eugene resident Judy Dippel, Pollard's daughter. "I have to say to people, this will probably never happen in Oregon again. It's really impressive." The cars on display that Pollard used are the Andy Granatelli STP Turbine, driven in 1968, and the Rolla Vollstedt Offenhauser, driven in 1966. "The turbine was very innovative," Dippel says. "Maybe the most innovative. It was a jet engine. They changed the restrictions and (Pollard) was one of four to drive the turbines." A sprint car that Pollard raced (owned by Del McClure) is also permanently on display. Additionally, an exhibit showcases Pollard memorabilia, including helmets, uniforms, goggles, gloves and a trophy he won in Milwaukee in 1969. The museum also honors Pollard during the first weekend of every May. Pollard drove in the USAC Championship Car series, racing in the 1965-73 seasons with 84 career starts, including the 1967-71 Indy 500 races. He finished in the top 10 30 times, with two victories (both in 1969). Pollard was much more than a racecar driver though, Dippel says. "He had a unique blend of traits," she says. "I would say people think of racecar drivers as having intense personalities, but he was extremely easygoing. He took time for every person he met and he particularly cared for kids and would do special things for them, especially at (Larue D. Carter Memorial Hospital) in Indianapolis. I still get emails today from kids who've grown up and remember him. He would take them into Gasoline Alley (the garage area). ... He had a genuinely optimistic, easy going, enthusiastic personality and just loved life." Pollard was the subject of author Bob Kehoe's book, "Art Pollard: The Life and Legacy of a Gentleman Racer." It was released in May. "I grew up in Portland and have always been a race fan," said Kehoe, a longtime automotive journalist. "Art was one of my heroes growing up. ... I always had in the back of my mind, nobody has written a biography of Art and he was not only a great racer but a great humanitarian. When I retired a couple years ago I had time to pursue the book. It's a work of love and an effort of love." The book, a two-year effort, is available through Amazon.com , Coastal181.com , the World of Speed Museum and through Kehoe ([email protected]). "(Kehoe) got in touch with drivers like Mario Andretti and others and a lot of them said the same thing (as me), that (Pollard) was one of the nicest people they've ever met," Dippel says. Adds Kehoe: "It's amazing what I learned throughout different interviews, the big personalities of racing. Nobody ever had a bad word to say about him. ... He was a fan favorite."
