Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Aug. 12, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Aug. 12, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Aug. 12, 1915 AITKEN FISH SCREEN ADOPTED BY STATE At its monthly meeting at Salem Wednesday, the state fish and game commission adopted the screen for ditches patented by J.S. Aitken of Medford as the official screen for use to prevent the destruction of fish fry by irrigation and mining conduits. The state will pay Mr. Aitken a royalty of $1.50 a screen up to four feet in width, with a sliding royalty for large screens. It is the intention of having the screen manufacturer at the penitentiary and supplied ditch owners at cost and the attorney general was asked for an opinion upon the legality of the procedure. Proposals for a trout hatchery at Butte Falls were favorably received, and an investigation of sites ordered, with the compilation of other data. S.S. Smith of Medford presented the claims for local anglers. SUGAR FACTORY BUILDER DUE IN CITY TOMORROW F.S. Bramwell, representing the Western Sugar company, is in Grants Pass and Gold Hill this afternoon, and according to a telephone message received by W.H. Gore, will arrive in this city in the morning. His visit will decide definitely the final details in the proposed building of a $600,000 sugar beet factory in the Rogue River valley. His first object will be to make a tour of the test beet tracts planted throughout the valley with Samuel Storey, the sugar beet soil expert, and the next step will be a meeting with the beet sugar committee formed last spring. According to the reports submitted, the one obstacle in the path of the construction work is the establishment of the fact that the locally grown beets possess the required amount of saccharine substance to make their milling profitable. The beets are now just beginning to develop and it is the stage when the sugar is formed in the fiber. The beets, as far as size, texture and quality, are concerned, are above standard. An inspection of sugar beet conditions in the lower Rogue River valley is being made. Citizens in charge of the sugar beet plant campaign have decided to organize their work along highly efficient lines. They will systematize every detail of the work. The establishment of a sugar beet factory is held as being vital to the future industrial prosperity of the valley, and is closely linked with the irrigation campaign now near to assurances of success.
