Vikings dodge Mustangs' upset bid MURPHY -- Dena Young produced at crunch time and helped Mazama remain undefeated in Skyline Conference girls basketball on Friday night. Young -- the conference's scoring leader -- connected on eight of her game-high 17 points in the fourth quarter as Mazama defeated pesky Hidden Valley 38-28. The Vikings improved to 5-0 in league play. "She's a clutch ballplayer," Hidden Valley coach Robby Tate said. "We had to stop her. We were trying to make other people beat us, but she got loose a couple of times." The Mustangs (6-9, 2-2) used a strong defensive effort to take a surprising 21-16 halftime lead. "Our girls take a lot of pride in defense," Tate said. "They don't give up a lot of points." But the Mustangs couldn't muster the same offensive output after intermission. Hidden Valley put up 23 shots before the break, but only managed 10 after that. "In the first half we attacked their 1-3-1 matchup zone pretty well," Tate said. "In the second half, we quit attacking their zone and started standing around." Hidden Valley trailed 28-25 with about three minutes left in the game when Young connected on her fourth 3-pointer of the game. After a Christina Wicks' field goal cut the Vikings' lead to 31-27, Young answered with her fifth 3-pointer at the 1:40 mark. "She (Young) is a tremendous ballplayer," Tate said. The Knights kept it close, staying within one point in the fourth quarter before the Hornets put it away by hitting six of seven free throws down the stretch. McKenzie Clark, a 6-foot senior post, topped North Valley with 12 points and a season-high 13 rebounds.
