Indians notch first-ever win over South ROSEBURG -- Thirteen years of misery were swept aside Saturday for the Roseburg High girls soccer team. Having not beaten South Medford in 13 years, the Indians earned a long-awaited 5-2 victory to knock the Panthers from their unbeaten perch in the Southern Oregon Conference. "It was the game of the year for us," Roseburg coach Bryce Martin said. "We could do no wrong." Coming off Wednesday's dramatic shootout victory over North Medford, the Panthers couldn't match Roseburg's efficiency. "I think they had an emotional letdown," Martin said of South. "We were moving girls in and out and we seemed to always be a step closer to the ball than them." South Medford coach Leslie Lang said Saturday's loss had more to do with Roseburg playing a strong game than the Panthers suffering a letdown. "We have no excuses," she said. "They played a good game. It just wasn't our day. "We knew Roseburg was going to be tough. It just didn't happen for us." Roseburg (7-2-3, 3-2 SOC) broke the game open in the first half with four goals in six minutes to take a 5-0 lead. "I've never seen anything like that in my life," Martin said of the scoring surge. South Medford scored an own-goal to give Roseburg a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute, then the floodgates opened as four different Indians found the net. Erin Goodell scored in the 13th minute, followed by Rachel Stribling in the 14th minute, Morgan Downie in the 17th minute and Hedda Gardsjord in the 19th minute. South Medford closed the gap with a goal at the 33-minute mark as Marissa Gillingham scored off an assist from Katie Casebeer. Gillingham added an unassisted goal in the 51st minute on a rebound effort after her initial shot bounced off the crossbar. NORTH MEDFORD 5, EAGLE POINT 0 --At Eagle Point, three days after suffering a sudden death shootout loss to South Medford, the North Medford girls put on a dominating performance. Kelsey Chamberlain and Tennille Bennett scored twice each and Jamie MacLauchlan added one goal as the Black Tornado (7-4, 4-1 SOC) moved into a tie for first in the SOC. Eagles forward Stephanie Lucas, who went into the match with 36 goals in 11 games, went scoreless and got off only three shots. Chamberlain scored in the ninth minute and MacLauchlan streaked down the right wing and blasted a shot into the far netting from 20 yards out at the 28th minute to give North Medford a 2-0 halftime lead. Eagle Point (7-4-1, 2-3 SOC) hung tough for the next 32 minutes, but North Medford's constant pressure finally produced three more goals in the final 10 minutes. GRANTS PASS 1, KLAMATH UNION 0 -- At Klamath Falls, freshman Alicia Gomes scored the game-winner with just over 16 minutes remaining in the match. Gomes hit a shot from a difficult angle that rolled off the hands of Klamath Union goalie Katrina Collins and into the net. Grants Pass led in shots on goal, 9-7. ASHLAND 4, CRATER 2 -- At Central Point, four different Grizzlies scored to help Ashland earn its first Southern Oregon Conference victory. Kirsten McNaught put the Grizzlies ahead at the 10-minute mark off an assist from Hanna Seltzer. Lindsay Huyett scored off a direct kick from 20 yards out 10 minutes later to increase the lead to 2-0. Crater answered in the 28th minute as Tessa Austermuehle scored off an assist from Stacey Schmelzer. Austermuehle received the ball with her back to the goal, wheeled and lofted a shot into the top left corner of the goal. Seltzer helped cushion Ashland's lead with a goal in the 37th minute on an indirect kick from Erin Cue. Jessica Bullen increased Ashland's lead to 4-1 in the 57th minute when her high volley was caught by Crater goalie Lindsay Munroe behind the goal line. Schmelzer capped the scoring with a breakaway goal in the 78th minute off an assist by Sarah Martinich. Ashland improved to 1-4 in SOC play, while Crater dropped to 0-5.
