Tonkinson 1934-2015 Fred Tonkinson, 80, passed away Friday, March 27, 2015 at Providence Hospital. He was born in Winfield, Kan. to Alonzo and Opal Tonkinson. Fred grew up in Chanute, Kan. In 1953, having graduated high school and completing one term in Junior College, Fred enlisted in the U.S. Navy.  That same year, his parents and sister moved to Lakewood, Calif. On December 11, 1954 Fred married Dorothy Webber of Long Beach, Calif. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Fred served 15 years in the Navy, then made an inter-service transfer to the U.S. Army, where he served as a Chief Warrant Officer. He retired from the military after serving a total of 20 years. After retiring from the Army, Fred moved his family to Medford, Ore. where he worked for 20 years with the Jackson County Parks Department. Fred enjoyed traveling, motorcycling, RV-ing, and fishing. (He belonged to the First United Methodist Church, M.O.A.A., and Southern Oregon Smart Travel Club.) Fred is survived by his wife; son, Mike Tonkinson (Michelle); daughter, Susan Tonkinson Martin; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his sister, Areta Ricketts; father and mother, Alonzo and Opal Diehl Tonkinson. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 9, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 607 W. Main St., Medford, OR. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, Diabetes or Alzheimers Organizations.
