A Medford man was arraigned Tuesday for charges from an incident Sunday afternoon on Interstate 5, south of Grants Pass, that included high-speed driving, two vehicle crashes and a non-fatal, officer-involved shooting. Cole Reeves, 25, was arraigned in the Jackson County Circuit Court with third-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer as well as misdemeanor counts of menacing, reckless driving, second-degree criminal mischief and reckless endangerment, according to the Jackson County District Attorney’s office. Reeves participated in the court proceeding by telephone. The Medford Police Department reported Monday that a Oregon State Police trooper attempted to stop a reckless driver who then proceeded to elude the trooper and travel speeds that exceeded 120 mph before crashing into another vehicle. Reeve’s vehicle stopped on the shoulder next to the fast lane. He got out of the auto carrying knives in both hands and began making his way toward the trooper, who had been commanding him to stop. The trooper shot the suspect at a close distance and the suspect was taken from the scene to a local hospital for treatment, police also stated. A tractor-trailer struck a police car parked along the road. No one was injured. Medford police and the DA’s office are working together on the investigation. The officer who shot the suspect won’t be identified until a grand jury investigation into the shooting is completed, and remains on administrative leave. The next court proceeding in Reeves’ case, a probable cause preliminary hearing, is scheduled on March 15.
