With dark clouds moving in, wind velocity increasing and lightning flashing across the evening sky, the Rogues were forced to suspend their Southern Division contest against the Corvallis Knights, trailing 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning. One of the largest crowds of the season scattered quickly when a cloud burst dumped rain. "The skies opened up on us, unfortunately," said Ian Church, Medford Rogues general manager. "We would have waited the traditional 30 minutes, but because the lights went out, we suspended it." Two light towers went dark but were later restored. The game will resume today from where the teams left off. Tuesday's suspended game will begin at 4:35 p.m., followed by the third and final game in the series at 6:35 p.m. Medford is 12-13 in the WCL, and Corvallis is 10-15. The game was a fundraiser for the Medford National Little League, which earned $1,268 for its all-star team by selling 317 tickets. "It's a great way for organizations to raise funds for their cause and for us to sell tickets," said Church. The Little Giants, of the Medford Parks and Recreation Department, were also in attendance due to the sponsorship of U.S. Cellular. Knights starting pitcher Chris Clements found a groove — striking out four straight before Tony Roque singled with one out in the bottom of the fifth. Then the umpires pulled everyone off the field because of the dangerous conditions. Medford's run came in the third inning, when Knights center fielder Emilio Alcantar could not corral second baseman Billy Frederick's soft fly on a diving attempt, and Derron Davis, who had singled with one out and moved to second on Dan Mayer's single, scored. Davis has now hit safely in 20 of the last 23 games. Corvallis scored single runs in each of the first two innings, then combined for four hits and one error for three runs in the top of the fourth against Medford starter Gabe Genter, out of Cal Riverside Genter (1-1) was pulled after four innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits and two strikeouts. The Rogues won the opener of the three-game series against Corvallis on Monday and improved to 9-1 in WCL games at home this season.
