La Grande hands Pilots first state loss PORTLAND - La Grande scored a run in the top of the eighth inning Saturday to hand the Ashland Pilots their first loss in the American Legion A state tournament, 4-3. The Pilots, 29-4-1, face Yamhill-Carlton today in the double-elimination tourney. If they win, they would have to win twice on Monday to claim the championship. Ashland will send Mike Allen to the mound today. La Grande scored three runs in the first inning to take command, and Ashland had trouble mounting a threat against left-hander Mike Baynes. Baynes threw 158 pitches in going the distance. He allowed six hits and struck out nine. "Things weren't quite clicking for us in the hitting department," said Ashland coach Josh Hamik. "You have those kinds of games. But we stayed in it and battled, we just came up a little short. "I'm confident we'll come back and see them in the championship game." The Pilots scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to tie it but couldn't get over the hump. Bill Rowe had two of Ashland's hits. On Friday, the Pilots belted three home runs, including a three-run shot by Rowe in the top of the eighth inning, in an eight-inning, 17-5 win over McKay. Allen had a two-run shot and Nick Danis a solo homer in a seven-run second inning. Allen went 4-for-4, and Ryan Decker and Rowe were each 3-for-3. SOUTHERN OREGON 13-11, REDDING 2-10 - The Southern Oregon RiverDogs finished their season in fine form Saturday, sweeping the Redding Spirits in amateur baseball at Miles Field. In the opener, the RiverDogs tallied a seven-run seventh inning to rout the Spirits. Tim Alvarez and K.C. Rumrey provided the key hits in the decisive frame. Alvarez ripped a two-run single and Rumrey an RBI double. Steve DeClerck blasted his second home run of the season, a two-run shot in the bottom of the fifth inning, to extend his hitting streak to 15 games. Nate Mayben, who doubled, and Caleb Robbins combined for six hits. Alvarez finished the game with three RBIs. Brendan Holmes pitched five solid innings, allowing just one unearned run and one walk. Errin Connors replaced Holmes in the sixth and allowed one run on three hits while fanning six over four innings. The RiverDogs finished the season with a mark of 20-18. KLAMATH FALLS ROLLS - At Corvallis, defending champion Klamath Falls won twice on Saturday in the American Legion AAA state tournament. In a late game, the Falcons downed Roseburg, 7-6, ending Doc Stewart's season. Earlier, Klamath Falls topped Corvallis, 9-2. In that game, Brian Kinsman and Jeff Mortensen each belted triples in a seven-run third inning to propel Klamath Falls in the American Legion AAA state tournament. Brad Bailey went the distance for the Falcons (51-17-1), giving up 11 hits on 135 pitches. Mortensen added a double in the fourth inning and finished the game with four RBIs. Softball REBELS BOUNCED FROM TOURNAMENT - At Mount Vernon, Wash., the Rogue Valley Rebels lost 1-0 to the San Ramon (Calif.) Stompers to end their Western National 12-and-under fastpitch run and, subsequently, their season. Jill Jeter and Ashleigh Cuddie combined to allow just one run over seven innings, but that lone run proved to be enough. The Rebels, 38-8, finished 20th in the 59-team tournament.
