According to a probable cause affidavit, Medford resident Ashlee Anne Clark, 31, is suspected of cashing checks from closed bank accounts and those she stole from area residents. Medford police Detective Sgt. Brent Mak said Clark would write herself checks from two closed accounts in her name, deposit them in new accounts, then immediately withdraw a majority of the funds. The affidavit states she sometimes enlisted help from two accomplices: 37-year-old Christopher Knight and 29-year-old Brittany Grieger. "Some of these suspects figured out it takes the bank a day or two to figure it out," Mak said. Police said Clark also stole a checkbook from a previous employer, which she used to forge additional checks. She is also suspected of using a stolen credit card six times at multiple locations around Medford, the affidavit states. Police say that credit card was new and stolen from an unsecured mailbox. "They were really running the gamut," Mak said. Mak said money obtained through the scheme was used to purchase random items, including liquor, food and drugs. Court records show Clark was released from the Jackson County Jail on her own recognizance and that she is set to be arraigned on multiple counts of identity theft Dec. 29. Investigators said Knight was cited and released on first-degree theft charges this week and that Grieger is in custody in California on unrelated charges. Mak said the case is a timely reminder for people to be alert for mail theft and identity theft as the holiday shopping season commences. With harried cashiers and shoppers dealing with long, hectic lines, reports of identity theft and theft likely will go up, with much of the crime conducted by folks on the move up and down Interstate 5, he said. "We are asking people to pay attention when they're shopping," Mak said. Consumers should also be on the lookout at home. Medford police wrote on Facebook that people expecting packages should pay close attention to the tracking number to know when it will be delivered. They also recommended having the package end its journey at the shipping company so it can be picked up there. "Leaving packages on your doorsteps until you get off work is not a good practice," the Facebook post reads. Anyone leaving town to spend the holidays elsewhere should leave interior and exterior lights on and tell a trusted neighbor to keep an eye on things, police suggested.
