Grants Pass girls register first soccer win GRANTS PASS - Domination doesn't always show up on the scoreboard. Grants Pass opened the girls soccer season with a 3-2 home victory over Fortuna, Calif., on Friday that wasn't as close as it seemed. "The final score doesn't indicate how the game went," said Grants Pass coach Hector Cruz, who estimated his squad had about 25 legitimate scoring opportunities. "We had a little bit of jitters with finishing in front of the goal." About 10 minutes in, Fortuna staked itself to a 1-0 advantage. But senior forward Natasha Wood answered just five minutes later on an assist from sophomore midfielder Allie Meier. In the next 10 minutes, the Cavers added two more goals to take command. First, senior sweeper Staci Feetham volleyed home a corner kick from senior midfielder Megan Moon. Next, sophomore forward Tina Taylor finished off a through pass from Moon. Fortuna struck again with about 10 minutes to play in the second half to provide the final margin. Sophomore fullbacks Tina Warnick and Katie Lamont contributed stingy defense for Grants Pass. The Cavers stay home to face Eureka, Calif., today. Boys ASHLAND 2, LA SALLE 1 - At Milwaukie, Ashland survived consecutive La Salle shots that bounded off the crossbar in the final minute to pull out a gritty season-opener. The Grizzlies jumped on top in the second minute when senior forward Scott Beaver pounced on a loose ball and finished following an Ashland corner kick. In the 55th minute, junior midfielder Will Fain lofted a half-volley over La Salle's onrushing goalkeeper to provide a 2-0 advantage. Junior midfielder Fletcher Beaudoin assisted. The Falcons, a perennial Class 3A power, finally found the net with eight minutes to play, as fullback Robert McDonough struck from about 16 yards out. La Salle fired seven shots on goal to Ashland's six and earned three corners to the Grizzlies' one. Ashland travels to Lebanon for a 1 p.m. match today.
