Ashley Knecht, a senior who’s seeded third in the singles bracket, upset No. 2 seed Tessa Kern of Corvallis, 6-3, 7-6 (5), in the semifinals to move into today’s championship round. Knecht will play top-seeded Madisyn Bryant of Marist in the final after Bryant steamrolled fourth-seeded Haley Moss of Wilsonville, 6-3, 6-2. Bryant defeated Knecht in the Midwestern League singles final last week. In girls doubles action, Ashland’s top-seeded team of Vika O’Brien and Anne Kim defeated the No. 3-seeded tandem of Lia VanSteeter and Anjali Chikkalingaiah (Crescent Valley), 6-3, 6-0, in the semifinals to move on to the final. There, they’ll play the No. 2 seeds, Sierra Winch and Jesse Vezo of Bend, for a chance to land O’Brien her fourth straight doubles title. The semifinal victories helped Ashland stay ahead of the pack in the 5A girls team title chase. The Grizzlies head into the final day in first place with 12 points, while Bend and Corvallis are tied for second with nine. CLASS 4A/3A/2A/1A STATE TOURNAMENT : At Corvallis, Cascade Christian sophomore Nicole Morse captured a pair of victories to land in the state semifinals in the first day of the tournament at Oregon State Tennis Complex. The third-seeded Morse endured Catlin Gabel’s Jessica McDermott for a 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 victory in the quarterfinals after cruising to a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Molalla’s Heather Loughridge in the opening round. Morse will face second-seeded Elsa Harris from Crook County today at 9 a.m. Boys Tennis CLASS 6A STATE TOURNAMENT : At Beaverton, Jonathan Williams of Grants Pass was stopped by Sprague’s Logan Blair in the consolation quarterfinals at Tualatin Hills Tennis Center. CLASS 5A STATE TOURNAMENT : At Portland, Ashland’s unseeded doubles team of Rox Rogers and Nur Shelton, both freshmen, dropped a hard-fought quarterfinal match to the No. 2-seeded team of Logan Hausler and Daniel Pino, (Summit), 6-4, 6-4. Ashland singles player Mischa Kirby, a junior, won two consolation matches to advance to the consolation final. He’ll face Nick Lee of La Salle. Kirby picked up an 8-3 win over Dante DeSimone in the consolation quarterfinals before getting an 8-6 victory versus La Salle Prep’s Thomas Foy. Ashland’s doubles team of David Lee and Kai Weston were nixed from the consolation bracket by Summit’s Josh Maitre and Peter Rutherford, who won, 8-5. CLASS 4A/3A/2A/1A STATE TOURNAMENT : At Corvallis, St. Mary’s Pratheev Weerakoon and the duo of Ian Newton and Zack Lewis were knocked out of contention in the first round but bounced back in the consolation round at Oregon State Tennis Complex. Weerakoon topped Ontario’s Sage Nakamura 8-1 in the consolation quarterfinals and will face Ignacio Aguilar of North Bend in the semifinals today. Weerakoon was knocked out of contention by Oregon Episcopal’s Daniel Leef in Round 1. Newton and Lewis beat Cascade’s Austin Schaeffer and Daniel Suelzle 8-1 in the quarterfinals of the consolation side and will take on Obed Eriza and Jered Pichette of Madras in the semifinals. Stephen Jin and Kevin Yan of Delphian eliminated the Crusaders’ doubles team in the opening round.
