Coolidge cruises to second in Class 2A state 3,000 MONMOUTH -- The St. Mary's Crusaders followed Friday's good performance at the Class 2A-1A state track meet with one even more impressive Saturday. Junior Trevor Coolidge, who placed second in the 3,000 meters on the first day of the meet, ran equally well Saturday. He posted a career-best time of 4:09.21 to place second in the 1,500 meters. "Trevor ran a very smart, tactical race to get second," said Crusaders coach Joe Volk of Coolidge, who also set a school record with the time, surpassing Paul Steinkemp's 1,500 mark of 4:09.8 set in 1981. Coolidge stayed back in the race initially, then overtook another runner with only 150 meters left to take second. "He ran a very gutsy race," said Volk. Coolidge finished second in both events to the same person, Jacob Stout of Portland Christian. "This season, I focused more on the higher speeds," said Coolidge, who improved on last season's sixth-place, 1,500 state-meet time of 4:17.88. "That prepared me more for the faster pace in the 1,500." St. Mary's girls 4 x 100 relay team -- Kristen Zielony, Jessica McHenry, Trina Stout and Megan Dode -- took fifth in a time of 52.79. "We had a lot of girls pick up medals, and that's a real testament to our sprint coach, Charlie LePari," said Volk. "He's been a real asset to the team." Stout placed fifth in the 100 (13.29) and took seventh in the 200 (27.34). Zielony finished eighth in the 100-meter hurdles (17.25). She also took fifth in the triple jump with a season-best 33-. "Kristen's marks in the triple jump are a good improvement," said Volk. "It's nice to see her up her season best." Leah Sawyer took eighth in the 1,500 (5:12.81), improving upon her personal record by six seconds and missing the school record by only 2.8 seconds. Michelle Anderson was in the event at 5:21.36. "This was our best showing in terms of points in quite a while," said Volk. The Crusaders will lose just two seniors: distance runner Martina Patella and pole-vaulter Julie Chalupa. Cascade Christian's Kelly Clarke grabbed 11th in shot put with a toss of 31-3, while teammate Brian Prins finished eighth in the boys 400 in a time of 54.47.
