Anne Wintemute is Pear Blossom queen Eagle Point High student chosen from among nine candidates in the scholarship pageant Saturday night By SARAH LEMON Mail Tribune An Eagle Point High School student will serve as the Medford Pear Blossom Festival senior queen. Anne Wintemute was chosen from a field of eight other young women representing local high schools at the 12th annual Senior Royalty Scholarship Pageant at 7 p.m. Saturday at the North Medford High School Auditorium. Wintemute will reign over the Pear Blossom Parade on April 13 and receives a $2,000 college scholarship. First runner-up is Molly Grossman of Ashland High School, and second runner-up is Kathryn Doshier, a Crater High School student. Other pageant contestants were: Nichele Brown of Cascade Christian High, Cassandra Lape of Phoenix High, Emma Wilkinson of South Medford High, Savannah Coronado of North Medford High, Stacy Smith of Butte Falls High and Jamie McClure of St. Mary's High. The high school seniors were judged on school leadership skills, community involvement, an interview with the judges, writing and presenting an essay written in the theme of "What a Country" and answering impromptu questions on stage. Each princess automatically won a $500 college scholarship. "It's just a really fun way to enjoy our achievements with other girls from around the Rogue Valley," Coronado said. Brian O'Connor, radio personality with Star 97, served as master of ceremonies for the seventh year. Judges included Lori Williams, vice president and commercial loan officer for Umpqua Bank; Jean Turner, soft line manager for Sears; Jeff Heaton, KOBI-TV meteorologist; and Scott Weaver, president of Insurance Market-place Inc. Earlier Saturday, two local 5-year-olds were crowned in the 49th Annual Junior Royalty pageant. They later sang and presented flowers in the senior pageant. Brianna Zorrus and Hunter Busby were selected as Junior Royalty Queen and King. First runner-up for the girls is Samantha Beck. Second runner-up is Rachel Walker. Third runner-up is Ruthbicela Paez. For the boys, Brayden Havener is first runner-up. Second runner-up is Zachary Flenner. Matthias Shields is third runner-up. Junior royalty with their senior counterparts will preside over the Pear Blossom Grand Parade at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 13. Floats designed for this year's "What a Country" theme in addition to horses, fire trucks, animals, bands, clowns and unusual vehicles will travel down Central Avenue and East Main Street to Alba Park.
