"She was such a good, loving person," Martha Hogue said of Marie Catherine Combee. "Marie was really into church, and she was the type of person who would help out anyone with anything." Despite that, personal problems apparently led Combee, 29, to believe that life was not worth living. Eagle Point Police Chief David Strand on Thursday described Combee as an unhappy person who "didn’t want to be in this world any longer." Combee’s husband, Darren Combee, told Hogue that his wife had been downhearted in recent months. Advertisement "Darren said that she did suffer a little bit from depression," Hogue said. Strand said investigators discovered a typed note in Combee’s purse that indicated she and her mother, Jeanette Marie Kimball, 50, wanted to die together. He said investigators found "absolutely no signs of struggle" at the scene of the murder-suicide. Strand declined to reveal the exact contents of the note. Police went to Kimball’s house in the first block of Comice Way in Eagle Point at about 3 p.m. Wednesday, after Kimball’s ex-husband phoned 9-1-1 to say he had found the women dead inside the home’s master bedroom upon his return from a fishing trip. Investigators believe Kimball shot her daughter once in the head with a handgun, then turned the weapon on herself. Strand said that while neither Kimball nor her daughter suffered from a diagnosed medical condition, Kimball had been under stress because of financial concerns. Court records show Kimball and her ex-husband, David Kimball, were divorced in January. But the couple remained living together in the yellow, single-story home on Comice Way. The Combees’ marriage of eight years appeared strong, Hogue said, adding that the couple was trying to have children of their own. "Marie loved Darren so much, and Darren loved her," Hogue said. "One of his comments to me was, ‘My angel is gone.’ " Hogue, a White City resident, said Darren Combee asked her Thursday to spread the word about a memorial fund established at Northwest Community Credit Union. Donations will be used to cover funeral expenses for Marie Combee and Jeanette Kimball. When contacted about the fund, the credit union’s branch manager told Hogue that the business would donate $100 for expenses. "That is an incredible thing for them to do," she said. Donations can be dropped off at the credit union or mailed to the business at 2079 Cardinal Ave., Medford, OR 97504. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
