SOU women smash records in soccer romp ASHLAND - The Southern Oregon women's soccer team assembled an offensive gem studded with school records in an 8-0 Cascade Conference victory over Eastern Oregon Friday afternoon. The Raiders (3-5, 3-2 Cascade), in their second season of intercollegiate play, victimized the winless Mountaineers (0-9, 0-5 Cascade), a first-year program, for school game records for goals, shots (35) and shots on goal (22). All three categories surpassed marks established in a 7-0 rout of Oregon Tech on Oct. 10 of last season. Volleyball SOUTHERN OREGON 30-30-30, OREGON TECH 20-28-21 - At Ashland, the Southern Oregon volleyball team continued its recent mastery of archrival Oregon Institute of Technology with a Cascade Conference victory at McNeal Pavilion on Friday. Fueled by double-digit kill and dig outputs by hitters Kristina Matchett (19 kills, 13 digs) and Shelley Gorin (14, 17), the Raiders (8-4, 3-3) topped the Owls (5-5, 2-4) for the eighth time in 10 meetings. since OIT reinstated the intercollegiate offering in 1997. Matchett, a sophomore from Klamath Falls, tallied nine kills in Game 1 alone and another seven in the hard-fought second stanza. Trailing 12-6 in Game 2, SOU came back to force five ties before staking a 28-26 margin on a cross-court smash by sophomore Sara Tatom. The Owls responded with a Kahealani Ayat kill and a Bree Pollard ace, but the Raiders clinched the frame on kills from Gorin and sophomore middle Lisa Aitchison. Tech led 5-3 in Game 3, but SOU's 6-0 and 10-2 scoring runs sealed the match. Senior setter Sabrina Garboden assisted 49 of Southern's 55 kills, while freshman Kelly Thoni tallied a match-high four blocks to go along with five kills and nine digs. OIT received a team-best 11 kill, 14-dig performance from Ayat. Sophomore Tyann Sandusky accumulated 12 digs, and senior all-star setter Nohea Hirahara had 23 assists and 11 digs.
