Slow drivers must pull over Is there a law that requires a slow-moving vehicle to pull over when there�s a certain number of cars behind it that can�t get by? It seems like school buses are the biggest offenders. I can�t count the times I�ve been stuck behind a school bus that�s letting children off. Isn�t this a traffic hazard? � Chuck B., Medford Medford police suggest a little patience, Chuck. Typically, slow drivers are required to use the right lane or travel as closely as possible to the right curb or edge of the road, according to the Oregon Driver Manual. Slow drivers must watch for congestion behind them and pull off the road at the first safe turnout to let traffic pass. School buses, however, don�t usually travel under the 25 mph speed limit on city streets, said Medford police traffic Sgt. Bob Hansen. Buses do slow down to turn corners and make stops. But school bus drivers generally won�t leave the roadway to drop children off; it�s considered unsafe, Hansen said. Besides, drivers are not allowed to pass school buses that are loading or unloading children. Under Oregon law, buses must use red flashing lights to indicate stops for children and drivers are prohibited from passing.
