Sisters Rebekah Durham, 8, and Melissa Durham, 7, love to sing and dance and regularly invite friends and family to watch them perform in the yard, mom Anne-Marie Durham said. As they sorted through their back-to-school gear in recent weeks, they wanted to share the excitement of new backpacks and colorful notebooks with families who might struggle to afford such supplies. They decided to invite neighbors and family to their next backyard performance and ask them to donate supplies or money for St. Vincent de Paul’s school-supply drive. Sunday afternoon about 50 people gathered at the Durham’s Clearview Avenue home for hot dogs, chips, punch and two hours of dance. The Durham girls and friend Stephanie Solorio took the stage — actually a wooden deck built for a hot tub — and put on a carefully choreographed program of belly dance, hip-hop moves and Mexican dances. Durham said she and her husband, Jim, have tried to instill in their daughters the importance of helping others. Mom and dad are proud, and the girls are eager to go on a Wal-Mart shopping spree to help supply schoolmates, Durham said.
