Top-ranked Henley holds off Pirates PHOENIX - The Phoenix High volleyball team has the talent to win a conference championship. The trouble is, the Pirates play in the Skyline Conference - the toughest 3A volleyball conference in the state. Phoenix played No. 1-ranked Henley tooth and nail Tuesday night, but the Hornets did all the right things at crunch time and escaped with a 15-11, 15-12 victory. Junior middle Stacy Maupin had 10 stuff blocks and senior outside hitter Sam Young was 26-for-26 at the service line with six aces to lead Henley. "They do all the little things at crunch time that enables them to win," Phoenix coach Tom Murphy said of the Hornets. "We were ahead in both games but we couldn't keep the momentum long enough to win the match. "And Young was the key. We had the lead a couple of times when she stepped to the service line and came up big." Phoenix slipped to 16-7 overall and 5-4 in conference play with the loss. Junior middles Tiffany Ross and Kelly Meredith led the way for the Pirates. Ross had 11 kills and six blocks while the 6-foot-1 Meredith had six kills and eight blocks. The Pirates went 43 of 44 from the service line. Jonie Mahon (12 for 12) and April Darvy (10 for 10) led the way. Phoenix took Henley to three games earlier this season. "We're proving we can hang with the best teams in the state - now we need to learn how to beat them," Murphy said.
