In his review, Wyatt thoughtfully answered your question. In case you missed the review of Lewis A. McArthur’s book, here is the pertinent part for your particular pondering. "In Jackson County, ‘Dead Indian Creek’ was first named in 1854 for two deceased Native Americans found nearby. The name stuck and was applied to the adjacent road until 1993 when, as McArthur put it, ‘Dead Indian Road’ was renamed ‘Dead Indian Memorial Road’ to preclude any interpretation denigrating American Indians." McArthur published the first edition of this book in 1928. Six editions and 76 years later, the 2004 version now weighs in at 1,073 pages and contains 6,200 entries.
