Michael Lane Woods, 32, of Grants Pass, told friends he was going to hike for a couple of weeks into the Kalmiopsis. He started out at Miami Bar on the Illinois River west of Selma near where a lightning strike started the Biscuit fire on July 13. An Army veteran, the hiker was carrying a blue backpack, a handgun, sleeping bag, fishing rod and some beef jerky. Search and rescue volunteers gave up the official search for Woods on Sept. 6, although firefighters and others working in the fire area keep an eye out for him. The Josephine County Sheriff’s Office chartered a private helicopter to fly the Illinois River basin and drainages around Miami Bar. A four-person swift-water rescue team hiked the river bed in the same area but turned up no clues. Woods is described as 6 feet tall, 160 pounds with dark brown hair and green eyes.
