Was it the bread makers that said their bread slices would be no more then 5 inches long, or did the toaster makers set the standard? Thanks for you help. — Bill K., via e-mail We’re guessing it’s been a long time since you popped into a store to buy a new toaster. Maybe since 1979? While 5 -inch slots may have cut it when Wonder Bread was a staple in American breakfasts, consumers now would be hard pressed to find a loaf among all the multi-grains sliced to that size. But we have good news. While browsing the Internet, we ran across at least one toaster with 6-inch-long slots that also are 1¼ -inch wide to accommodate another post-1970s phenomenon: the popularity of bagels. Advertisement Many new toasters even have a feature that automatically adjusts for bread width to keep it centrally positioned during toasting. Of course, moving into the modern era of kitchen appliances probably means paying more than you did in 1979. And don’t even get us started on Texas toast.
