SOU (1-1) lost four of its five fumbles and committed five turnovers overall in suffering its first shutout since Nov. 4, 2000, when Pacific Lutheran dashed the Raiders’ playoff hopes with a 33-0 triumph. "It just wasn’t our night," said SOU head coach Jeff Olson. "My hat’s off to (Humboldt State). They were a better team than us tonight." SOU’s offense proved anemic against the Lumberjacks, with the Raiders compiling 159 yards of total offense on only 46 snaps. Quarterback Brandon Griffith completed 11 of 19 passes for 86 yards and an interception, with a long of 14 to Bobby Poeltl. Running back Antar Mahasin posted 53 yards rushing on 11 carries, including a 24-yard scamper. Advertisement The lack of offensive production and fumble woes paid a price on the Raider defense, which held its own against the high-octane Lumberjacks despite being on the field for the majority of the game. Humboldt State finished with 346 yards of total offense. "Our defense was backed up all night," said Olson. "(The Lumberjacks) took advantage of field position and kept our team on the field too long tonight." Jason Baughman completed 15 of 22 passes for 148 yards, one TD and one interception to pace Humboldt State, while Dustin Creager added seven receptions for 94 yards and one score and Lionel Arnold carried 21 times for 86 yards and a TD. "We’re 1-1 and regardless of what the score was, it’s just one loss on the ledger," said Olson. "We’ve got to put it behind us right away and we’ve got to move on." SOU remains on the road to face Rocky Mountain of Montana next Saturday. At Arcata, Calif. Volleyball SOUTHERN OREGON 30-30-30, CASCADE 12-20-14 — At Portland, the No. 9-ranked Southern Oregon volleyball team used a strong attack at the net and a mesmerizing serve to brush aside Cascade College in a Cascade Conference match Saturday night. The Raiders (8-3, 3-0) were led by sophomore outside hitter Jess Childress with 12 kills. Former North Medford standout Kristin Ferris torched the Thunderbirds with seven service aces and many more serves that were trouble for Cascade. The T-Birds (0-4, 0-3) attacked at just a .043 percentage mark and put down only 23 kills to the visitors’ .391 and 51. Bree Robinson led Cascade with six kills, Jolene Anderson added five kills and nine digs. SOU returns to action on Sept. 17 against Albertson.
