Roseburg dominates at swim meet ASHLAND � Roseburg, as expected, dominated on the first day of the District 6AAAA Swimming Championships Friday at the Southern Oregon University pool. The Indians had the fastest preliminary times in 11 of the 16 boys and girls individual events. The meet wraps up today, beginning at noon, with all of the finals, including the relay events, for which there were no prelims. District winners qualify for state next week at the Osborn Aquatic Center in Corvallis. Swimmers can also advance by meeting qualifying standards or making it as a wild card. Area swimmers vying for state berths include Brad Scoles and Arron Nelson of the Ashland boys and Liz Alrick of the Ashland girls, Ashley Johnson and Lynca Loeffler of the South Medford girls and Jamie Erickson of the North Medford girls. Scoles is a strong contender to win both the 100- and 200-yard freestyles. In the latter, he�ll battle Roseburg�s Nick Thompson, the brother of Olympic bronze medalist and American mile record-holder Chris Thompson. Scoles� competition in the 100 will come from freshman teammate Nelson, who came from the back in the pack to post the No. 1 50 free time (23.73) and the No. 2 time in the 100 free (52.80). Scoles� top time in the 100 free was 50.21. In girls events, prelim times were deceptively spread out in the 200 individual medley, but it will be one of today�s marquee races. Roseburg�s Mari Embertson (2:13.10), South�s Johnson (2:19.40) and Klamath Union�s Patricia Havey (2:24.04) will go at it. Johnson also had the second-best time in the 100 fly (1:02.13). Erickson was tops in the 200 free (2:06.40) and second in the 100 back (1:04.17), Alrick was No. 2 in the 100 free (57.72) and Loeffler No. 2 in the 500 free (5:51.68). District 4AAA RECORDS SET � At Grants Pass, two district records a Phoenix High school mark were set during preliminary action at the Grants Pass YMCA. The finals today begin at 1 p.m. Mazama�s Chris Ritter set a record in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:20.75, breaking the 1999 mark of 5:21.96 by Alex Steeley of Cottage Grove. Freshman Jessica Morrison of Henley set a mark of 1:13.31 in the 100 breaststroke, besting the 1:14.56 of Reedsport�s Kristen Henry in 1999. Phoenix�s Lane Munroe set the school standard for the second straight week in the 100 breast with a time of 1:12.16. He clocked 1:13.40 last week.
