California driver dies in accident on icy road A California man was killed Wednesday morning in a car accident east of Ashland. Dwayne Eddie Southard, 32, of Mount Shasta, died at the scene of the accident, which happened at 6:11 a.m. about a quarter mile beyond the summit of Dead Indian Memorial Road. Southard was driving north in a 1991 four-wheel-drive Dodge Dakota when the vehicle skidded out of control on the frosty roadway, according to the Jackson County Sheriff's Department. His Dodge skidded into the path of a southbound 1973 Ford pickup driven by Daniel Albert Cheuvront, 57, of Chiloquin. Southard suffered major head injuries and died at the scene. His wife, Tammy L. Southard, 34, was taken by Mercy Flights helicopter to Ashland Community Hospital, where she was treated and released. Deputies said neither she nor her husband had been wearing seat belts. Cheuvront and his passenger, Arthur James Atchison, 63, also of Chiloquin, both had been wearing seat belts and were not injured. Southard is the 26th person to die in a car accident in the county so far this year, according to the sheriff's office. Last year, there were 21 fatalities.
