Eagle Point comes up short against Henley EAGLE POINT - A strong finish couldn't overcome a poor start for the Eagle Point softball team on Thursday. The Eagles fell behind 5-0 to Henley, then rallied before coming up short in a 6-4, non-conference game to the Hornets. Freshman Kelsey Heider started the game for the Eagles (3-1) and pitched well until running into trouble in the third inning. Heider gave up four runs and four straight hits before giving way to Jamie Williams. "We showed a little character after battling back," said Eagle Point coach Keith Williams. "Kelsey's still trying to feel her way around. "The real disappointment was our performance at the plate." Henley pitcher Jessica Birt struck out 11 and gave up six hits to Eagle Point. "She's (Birt) a pretty solid pitcher," said Keith Williams. "She had us chasing her changeup and had a good dropball working." Jamie Williams had three hits in four at-bats to pace the Eagles. GRANTS PASS 1, PHOENIX 0 , 10 innings - At Phoenix, Grants Pass took advantage of international tiebreaking rules in the 10th inning, getting a single from Kathy Richard to drive home the game's only run. The Cavers' Jessica Morton and Phoenix's Tiffany Ross engaged in a classic pitchers' duel, each lasting the entire 10 innings. Morton, a senior, struck out 10 and allowed just one hit and one walk. In improving to 1-0, Morton was also involved in an integral play in the bottom of the 10th. After a Morton pitch skipped past senior catcher Richard, Morton took a throw at the plate from Richard and tagged out a Pirates' runner - the one who began the inning at second base under the international tiebreaking rules - for the second out. Ross allowed just five hits, striking out nine. Grants Pass is 3-0, Phoenix 0-3.
