District board members voted unanimously at their Thursday public meeting to forgo a name change. The decision comes on the heels of a public survey's results, in which respondents were asked to choose their preferred name. In roughly a week, the survey garnered votes from 851 respondents. Jackson County Library Services received 502 votes, or 59 percent. Jackson County Libraries and Libraries of Jackson County were also choices. Library officials decided to explore a possible name change in the midst of devising a new logo to differentiate themselves from Jackson County government. The libraries came under the governance of a separate board last spring following an election. The district will levy a property tax to pay for operating costs instead of relying on county general fund dollars as libraries did in the past. "It was logical to consider whether we wanted to do this at the same time or not," board member Monica Weyhe said at the meeting. "We've heard from the public." Some residents voiced concerns that changing the name would be a waste of time, funds and resources for a just-formed board. Board members said looking at a possible name change was a necessary step, though a minor one compared to the board's budget. "I think this board has been focused on the right priorities," board member Carol Doty said. "We thought before we printed letterhead, we ought to know our name."
